Costa Rica Fishing: Inside Scoop On Where To Go
You know the maxim: The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work. Are you an avid fisherman (or woman) a bit tired of being confined to local lakes and rivers? Think about winter fishing. Cold days on a frozen lake or crystal clear tropical days. Hard choice? Not!!! Trade in your Chapstick and runny nose for suntan lotion, shorts and a flowered shirt, hop a jet to Costa Rica and enjoy fishing like you have never thought possible. Costa Rica fishing is exactly what the doctor orders for winter time blues.
Of course, you can always just fish close to home. It is always fun to catch that little trout. Six hours of fishing for three-and-a-half minutes of fun. Now, imagine catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the awesome marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!
If you want to try coast, the Gold Coast around Tamarindo and Flamingo offer the most popular Costa Rica fishing spots. There, sailfish can be caught throughout the entire year but for the best fishing, plan between May and August . Tuna are abundant here between August to October. It is not uncommon to find tuna schools of 40 to 60 pounders and sometimes groups with some fishing tipping the scales at 200 to 400 pounds. The bay of Papagayo from November to March is a great place to catch roosterfish. They see, to prefer shorelines and are usually caught in around 60 feet of water. Good sized marlin, colorful dorado, and wahoo can also be caught here at different times of the year.
Many people fishing in Costa Rica are looking for billfish and these beauties are very common along the Central Pacific coast. Drive to world famous Los Suenos Marina or Quepos and charter into the offshore waters to catch marlin and sailfish. The best fishing is during high tourist season, December through April. The vibrant dorado fish is often found here May to October while trolling. Closer to shore, folks commonly catch snapper, snook, roosterfish, and wahoo. Tuna are offshore.
Golfo Dulce, Drake Bay, and Puerto Jiminez are places to be aware of when fishing along the South Pacific coast off the incomparable Osa Peninsula. In the months where the waters are warmer, you have a great chance at hooking sailfish and large marlin. For the best inland fishing in the country, go to the Golfo Dulce area. It is a haven for many kinds of fish because of its rock terrain and many coves. Expect to catch sharp toothed barracuda, grouper, delicious sea bass, snapper, amberjack, wahoo, and even roosters here. You will not be let down if you angle in these areas!
On the Atlantic coast, you will find the world-famous Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado fishing centers up to the Nicaragua border. The seas here can be very choppy but when the waters are flat, this is a deep sea angler’s dream spot! From/Between May to November, the valuable tarpon fish is plentiful here, and they can attain weights of to two hundred. If you are very lucky, you might land a rare Atlantic sail. This is also a good area for large snook. Jack Crevalle, guapote, giant grouper, and tripletail can also be caught here. And, do not forget to visit the world famous green sea turtle nesting beaches at Tortuguero.
Costa Rica fishing attracts serious fishermen who want a world-class experience and a great tropical vacation. The bordering waters off two oceans offer a staggering amount of fish species.
