The Awesome O’Malley: Sappy film of ruthless cop O’Brien and meager guy Bogart who has lame baby girl and turns to offense to aid her. This is a pretty tacky film. Cast includes Pat O’Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, Donald Crisp, Mary Gordon, Frieda Inescort, and Sybil Jason. (71 minutes, 1937)
Follow the Fleet: Admirable lyrical with seamen Astaire and Scott courting siblings Rogers and Hilliard. Irving Berlin melodies contain “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” “Let Yourself Go,” “We Noticed the Ocean.” A revising of Beach Leave, a 1925 Richard Barthelmess flick, and the 1930 lyrical Hit the Deck. That’s Lucille Ball as Cat. Cast includes Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Randolph Scott, Harriet Hilliard Nelson, Astrid AlIwyn, and Betty Grable. (110 minutes, 1936)
Demolition Man: This futuristic sci-fi pits two violent men from the past brought of suspended animation in a nonviolent and crime free society. Simon Phoenix, a violent man who has be in deep freeze for years is ‘thawed’, and freed on parole. When he goes back to his violent ways, the police of the future are unable to capture him. They thaw John Spartan, the man who caught Simon the first time and ask him to bring Simon in.
The Incredibles: This is an animated, family oriented, adventure movie. Bob Parr, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, and his wife used to be superheroes, saving lives on a daily basis. Years later they have given up that life and are living a normal life in the suburbs. When Bob receive a mysterious message that summons him to an island in the middle of nowhere, Mr. Incredible is reborn.
King of Jazz: Million dollar lyrical revue, shot in 2-color Technicolor format, is filled with bigger-than-life production numbers and remarkable melodies. Highlights contain Walter Lantz’s animation pattern, Joe Venuti’s swing violin, youthful Bing Crosby with the Tempo Boys, and, obviously, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” which in early Technicolor is more a rhapsody in turquoise. Cast includes Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, John Boles, Jeanette Loff, The Tempo Boys Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, and Harry Barris. (93 minutes, 1930)
Bliss: High-powered businessman has a chief heart assault, sees himself dying, and then refreshes-which changes his whole outlook on life. After a dynamic opening this stylized satire slows to a snail’s pace and loses its shove. On the other hand, it was an Australian Academy Prize victor and a global film carnival top choice, so magistrate for your self. Cast includes Barry Otto, Lynette Curran, Helen Jones, Miles Buchanan, Gia Carides, and Tim Robertson. (111 minutes, 1985)
Saw 2: There has been a new murder, and all the evidence makes it look like Jigsaw is at it again. Detective Eric Mathews starts to hunt Jigsaw down. He catches him easily, but quickly learns that there are eight other victims already fighting for their lives. So once again, Jigsaw holds all the cards.
Payday: Acerbic, vibrant picture of life on the street with a conceited, selfish country and western music megastar, a jerk who calls on his supervisor to “fix” some complications that crop up during the concert tour. One of those prototypical early1970s films that makes modern American movie theater come across bland. Cast includes Rip Torn, Anna Capri, Cliff Emmich, and Michael C. Gwynne. (103 minutes, 1973)
