Florida quarterback Tim Tebow shook off the effects of a concussion suffered against Kentucky two weeks ago and returned to lead the #1 ranked Gators to a hard fought 13-3 victory over #4 ranked LSU. Tebow got a good deal of help from a nasty Florida defense, and the largest crowd in LSU history (93,129) left disappointed as the Bayou Bengals offense was almost completely shut down.
College football betting enthusiasts who backed Florida as a -9 road favorite weren’t able to breathe easy until the final whistle, but eventually enjoyed a payday with the narrowest of pointspread covers. The Gators improved their ATS record over the past three years to a glossy 22-7 and they’ve covered 8 of their last 9 on the road. The combined 16 points scored went well UNDER the posted total of 45. The Gators have played UNDER in 2 of their 3 games with a posted total this season, while LSU has gone UNDER in 3 of 5.
After the game, Tebow characteristically explained that he tried to play smart but without fear:
“I tried to play smart. I told him, I said, when we were talking to Coach [Urban] Meyer, I said, ‘I’m not going to go out there and play tentative or scared. That’s not me.’ I did try to play smart but I wasn’t scared or timid at all.”
Tebow was also not the least bit intimidated by the huge crowd of LSU partisans:
“This place is one of my favorite stadiums to play in. It just gets your adrenaline going, then to play against a great defense like that.”
Tebow returned to practice earlier this week, but wasn’t medically cleared to play until a few hours before gametime. Even then, he was listed as a game time decision. Coach Urban Meyer talked about the difficult decision he had to make:
“It was a tough deal and I kept saying, ‘Would I play my son?’ You know Tim,” Meyer said. “It was, ‘Let me play. Let me play.’ Nonstop.”
Gators safety Will Hill said that the defense knew that they’d have to play well:
We knew Tim would suit up but we didn’t know if he would play, but we didn’t care. The defense knew what we had to do to come out and win this game.”
LSU receiver Brandon LaFell blamed his teams mistakes for the loss:
Those guys have a pretty good defense. We had a ton of chances, then we would get a mistake … Too many mistakes.”
Florida will try to keep their 15 game winning streak going next weekend as they host the University of Arkansas. They’ll be on the road at Mississippi State the following weekend before they face Georgia in the game fondly known as The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” on October 31. LSU will take a bye weekend before returning to action against Auburn on October 24.

The Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves an unlikely ally in an all too close road game against the Detroit Lions: the fans. With Steelers’ fans at times appearing to outnumber Lions’ supporters, the Steelers got a late game boost from their enthusiasm. On the field, Ben Roethlisberger threw a season high three touchdown passes as the Steelers survived by a final score of 28-20. Pittsburgh improved to 3-2 with the victory, while Detroit dropped to 1-4. Despite their record, Detroit has shown signs of progress.
NFL betting enthusiasts who backed the Lions as +11 home underdogs were rewarded with the pointspread cover. The Lions have covered two of their five games this season, while the Steelers slumped to 1-4 against the number. The 48 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 44.
After the game, the biggest topic of conversation was the vocal support of the Pittsburgh fans. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley said that they were making so much noise that it undermined the Detroit offense’s effort:
“That worked in our favor. Those offensive linemen couldn’t hear the snap count, so they had to watch the ball just like we do.”
Hines Ward also praised the fans that made the 4 hour trip from Pittsburgh, saying it evoked memories of the 2006 Superbowl at the venue:
“It brought back a lot of memories. We had just as many fans as we did that time.”
Head coach Mike Tomlin added his praise:
“Man, they traveled awesome. It was spectacular to stand on the visiting sideline and see the fan support that we had today in this building.”
Lions’ coach Jim Schwartz took some consolation from his team’s effort in the loss:
“We didn’t always play smart in that game and we didn’t always play well, but I’m proud that we battled the whole way. There were a couple places where it would have been easy for us to give in, and we didn’t do that.”
Lions’ QB Daunte Culpepper echoed his coach’s sentiments:
“I still think we have a good ballclub here, but a good ballclub will look at a situation like this and use it to find a way to start winning these games. That’s what we have to find a way to do.”
The Steelers return home for their next two games. They’ll host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, with the Steelers a -14 home favorite and the total set at 38. The Minnesota Vikings will come to town the following Sunday and after a bye week Pittsburgh will head west to face the surprising Denver Broncos on Monday, November 9. The Lions will play at Green Bay this weekend as a +13 road underdog with the total set at 48.
It’s obvious that the San Francisco 49ers are heading in the right direction under Mike Singletary, but you couldn’t tell by watching their game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Falcons scored six touchdowns against the Niners, with running back Michael Turner accounting for three of the scores as Atlanta routed San Francisco by a lopsided 45-10 final score. It was the Niners’ worst defeat since a 41-0 loss back in 2006 under former coach Mike Nolan.
The NFL betting lines had the game listed as a ‘PICK’, giving the Falcons the ATS win with their easy straight up victory. It was the 49ers first loss against the spread this season, while Atlanta upped their record to 3-1 to the money. The combined 55 points went OVER the posted total of 39′. It was San Francisco’s second OVER of the year in five games, while Atlanta has split their NFL totals with a 2-2 mark.
After the game, the fiery Singletary apologized for cussing out former 49er and current Falcons’ lineman Harvey Dahl:
“I’ll put it this way: I wish I had more coaching etiquette. I don’t. I love my players and when someone responds about my players in a particular way, I may do some things I shouldn’t do. I have to get better at those things as time goes on. Even though the player was talking to me, I should not have said what I said. It wasn’t anything bad, it was just something that shouldn’t have happened.”
Roddy White set a Falcons’ record with 210 receiving yards, and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on his second touchdown of the day. With his team in full control, Atlanta coach Mike Smith had to be amused:
“He didn’t hit the landing because if he hits the landing it’s not a 15-yard penalty. I told him if he’s going to do it, it needs to be Olga Korbut. And he looked at me like he doesn’t know who Olga Korbut is. Then I told him, ‘Well, maybe Mary Lou Retton.’ And then I figure that’s ‘86, he doesn’t know who Mary Lou Retton is. It went right over his head and my head.”
Smith admitted that he hadn’t been in top form so far this season:
“I felt like I haven’t been playing well up to this point in the season. Me and coach Smith had a talk. He was like, ‘You gotta get back to being yourself again. You gotta go out there and be the old Roddy. No pressure. Just go out there and play.’”
The Falcons will return home on Sunday to host the Chicago Bears, with Atlanta a -3 home favorite and the total set at 45′. They’ll play their next two on the road, traveling to Texas for a game against the Dallas Cowboys the following week and to New Orleans to face the Saints on Monday, November 2. The 49ers will have a bye this week before traveling to Houston to play the Texans on October 25.
The day after his 40th birthday, the Minnesota Vikings’ Brett Favre threw for 232 yards and a touchdown against one interception as his team easily beat the pitiful St. Louis Rams by a final score of 38-10. The Vikings are now 5-0 for the first time in six years and Favre is 5-0 for the first time in his Hall of Fame career. The Rams, who’ve scored only 4 offensive touchdowns in five games this season, dropped to 0-5.
Minnesota had no trouble covering the NFL pointspread as -10 road favorites. The cover improved the Vikings to 4-1 against the spread, while the Rams slumped to 1-4 versus the number. The 48 points scored went OVER the posted total of 44′. The Rams have gone OVER in four of five games this season, while the Rams have gone UNDER in three of their five NFL totals.
After the contest, Favre talked about the hot start at his relatively advanced age:
“I hope there’s many more to come. I’d be lying if I said I thought I’d still be playing at 40 and not miss a game at this point. I just hope I can lead this team to bigger and better things.”
For the Rams, things can’t get much worse. St. Louis guard Richie Incognito surveyed the carnage:
“This is extremely tough. It wears on you, but to be a professional, you don’t let it show. You just keep preparing hard to go out and get a win.”
St. Louis is almost definitely the worst team in the NFL at this point. They’re averaging 6.8 points per game while giving up an average of 29.2 points per game. They’ve allowed more than 35 points in each of their last three games, they’ve committed seven turnovers in their past two games. In their last three outings they’ve been outscored by a combined score of 109-27.
Minnesota will try to extend their undefeated start this weekend as they host the Baltimore Ravens. They’ll then face two tough games on the road, starting with the following Sunday at Pittsburgh against the defending Superbowl champion Steelers. A bigger game may loom a week later, as the Vikings will head to Lambeau Field in Green Bay for a rematch against Favre’s old team. The Rams will try to put one in the win column as they head to Florida to face the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend. They’ll host the Indianapolis Colts the following Sunday before traveling to Detroit on November 1.
South America will host the Summer Olympic Games for the first time in 2016, as Rio De Janeiro, Brazil was awarded the honor on Friday. Rio beat out the US choice of Chicago, Illinois along with Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain to earn the right to host the games. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite–including President Barak Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey–Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention. Tokyo was the next to go, before Rio got the nod over Madrid in the final round of balloting.
Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart with a passionate speech that stood in marked contrast to Obamas typically baleful collection of talking points;
“It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country.”
The Olympic committee was apparently swayed by this presentation and paid no mind to Rios many downsides. It is without a doubt the most dangerous of the finalist cities, where drug cartels and armed bands of thugs roam without impunity. Well do to Rio citizens are used to removing watches and jewelry before they drive anywhere lest they be targeted by carjacking brigands. Rios murder rate is also one of the highest in the world. Brazilian bid officials have stressed that security will be a priority at the games and it better be lest the Olympics turn into a bloodbath.
Some IOC members suggested that the summary dismissal of Chicagos bid was more of a rebuke of the notoriously corrupt USOC. The last two Olympics held in the US were tainted by crime and corruption. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics were disrupted by a terrorist bombing, while the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games were marred by a well known bribery and corruption scandal.
The Carolina Panthers finally got one in the win column on Sunday afternoon, using a furious second half comeback to defeat the slumping Washington Redskins 20-17. Washington led 17-2 early in the third quarter before Carolina scored the final 18 points of the game to earn the victory. Jonathan Stewarts eight yard fourth quarter run for a touchdown with a successful two point conversion completed the Panthers comeback. Carolina improved to 1-3 on the season while Washington dropped to 2-3.
NFL betting devotees who backed Washington as +5 road underdogs were finally rewarded for their faith as the Redskins covered for the first time this season. The Redskins are now 1-4 against the spread while the Panthers remain winless against the money at 0-4. The 37 combined points just managed to stay UNDER the posted total of 38. Washington has gone UNDER in four of five games this season, while Carolina evened their NFL totals mark at 2-2 on the year. 6 of the last eight meetings between the two teams have gone UNDER the total.
Redskins coach Jim Zorn is now on the hotseat after another defeat. The Redskins started the 2008 season 6-2, but are only 4-9 since then. The biggest problem this year has been offensive productivity”heading into this game the Redskins were averaging a mere 14 points per game. By that metric, the 17 points they put up in the first contest under new offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis has to seen as a marginal improvement. Of bigger concern, however, is the fact that the team blew a 15 point second half lead.
The victory, meanwhile, may have taken at least some of the pressure off of Panthers QB Jake Delhomme who is suffering through an awful season. Delhomme threw for 181 yards against Washington with one touchdown and one interception. Delhomme now has eight interceptions in four games this season, contributing greatly to the -8 turnover margin that the Panthers took into Sundays encounter. After the game, he expressed relief at getting a win under his belt:
“Anything that could have gone wrong the first month or so has gone wrong. We’ll take it any way we can get it.”
His Washington counterpart Jason Campbell was efficient, if not spectacular, with 145 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. In another bright spot for the Redskins, Clinton Portis scored his first rushing touchdown of the season early in the fourth quarter. He had caught a pass for a touchdown to open the Washington scoring in the first quarter. Portis was expected to carry much of the Redskins’ offensive load but has largely been a non-factor.
The Panthers will now try to string together a short winning streak as they head to Florida next Sunday to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Theyll return home the following week to face a struggling Buffalo Bills team before going back on the road to play the Arizona Cardinals. The Redskins will play their next two games at home and then enjoy a bye week. Theyll welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to FedEx Field next Sunday, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles the following week. Theyll return to action after the bye week on November 8th, taking on the Atlanta Falcons at The Georgia Dome.
The New York Giants used a potent ground attack and a suffocating defense to shut out the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-0 on Sunday. The Giants amassed 397 total yards including 226 on the ground, while the defense held Tampa to 86 yards of total offense and five first downs. The Giants improved to 3-0 on the season, while Tampa dropped to 0-3 and lost for the seventh straight time dating back to last season.
The Giants easily covered as -6 road favorites, improving their ATS mark to 3-0 on the season as well. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, are 0-3 both straight up and against the spread.
After the contest Giants coach Tom Coughlin talked about his teams dual priorities for the week:
“We had a game in which we didn’t play very well against the run, so we knew that we would be tested and we would have to rise up and do a better job there. We also knew we needed to rush the ball better than we had, so we did a pretty good job with that.”
Over in the Bucs locker room, head coach Raheem Morris-who is still looking for his first victory at the helm of a NFL team”had little positive to say about his teams performance:
“They beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. … It wasn’t even close.”
“We have no choice but to get better than this performance. You get five first downs and you’re 0-for-9 on third down. You have 86 yards total offense. It was completely disastrous.”
Giants running back Brandon Jacobs gave much of the credit for the victory to his defense:
“Our defense was very, very, very impressive. I knew they would come out with a chip on their shoulder.”
Impressive enough to leave Bucs receiver Michael Clayton hanging his head and looking for answers:
“It was disappointing, a little bit embarrassing. We have to play better.”
The Giants will play at Kansas City this Sunday as they try to maintain their unbeaten 2009 regular season record. New York is a -9 road favorite with the total set at 42. Theyll host the Oakland Raiders the following Sunday before playing at New Orleans on October 18. Tampa Bay will play their next two games on the road, beginning this weekend against the Washington Redskins. The Redskins are -7 home favorites with the total set at 37. The Bucs will play at Philadelphia the following Sunday before returning home to face the Carolina Panthers on October 18.
Ever since he burst onto the MMA scene Joe Lauzon has been working to earn respect. Hes lost only once since then–to top contender Kenny Florian in a bout that earned fight of the night honors–but for some reason hes had trouble being taken seriously as a top contender in the UFCs lightweight division. In the main event at the UFC Ultimate Fight Night in Tampa, Lauzon withstood a game challenge from late replacement Jeremy Stephens to earn a 2nd round submission victory.
Lauzon was in control of the fight throughout, but Stephens gave a good account of himself despite his opponents obvious technical superiority on the ground. Stephens wasnt able to match up with Lauzons ever improving BJJ skills, but he used good old fashioned tenacity and some powerful punching to keep the fight competitive throughout. Lauzon appeared to be on the verge of ending the fight midway through the second with a ground and pound assault that he attempted to transition into a rear naked choke. Stephens fought back with a vengeance despite his disadvantageous position and opened a nasty cut on Lauzons forehead with an elbow strike.
Lauzon gained a new sense of urgency not wanting to lose on a stoppage due to the cut. He regained control on the ground and from full mount twisted into a nasty arm bar. Stephens tried to extricate himself, but was eventually forced to tap giving the bloody Lauzon a hard fought triumph.
The semifinal matchup featured another impressive effort from Cain Velesquez, who many have pegged as the heavyweight superstar of the future. Velesquez is a formidable physical presence at 62 241 pounds, and has very well developed technical skills for a fighter with only five bouts under his belt.
Velesquez was never really threatened in the fight, but he did have difficulty finishing off tough UFC newcomer Dennis Stojnic. Stojnic displayed impressive toughness and a chin of granite, which is less surprising given his training home at Amsterdams Golden Glory gym where he works alongside such fighters as K-1s Semmy Schilt and DREAMs Alistair Overeem. Stojnic did become the first of Velasquezs opponents to make it into the second round as he withstood a brutal beating near the end of the first to make it to the bell.
In the second round, Velesquez quickly caught his opponent and sent him to the canvas with a nice combination which he followed up with another ground and pound attack. Stojnic again kept trying to defend himself despite a hellacious beating, though the referee finally jumped in and stopped the contest awarding Velesquez the TKO verdict. While Velesquez continues to show all of the qualities of a future top heavyweight, he needs to improve his stopping power and ability to finish a fight.
On the undercard, Josh The Dentist Neer earned a tapout victory over the sports best known (and perhaps only) vegan, Mac Danzig. Danzig looked decent in the first round but in the second he looked listless and quickly fell victim to a nasty triangle choke.
In the opening bout of the evening, up-and-coming welterweight Anthony Rumble Johnson used his significant height and reach advantage to dispatch tough Luigi Fioravanti. After the fight he was very critical of himself in his postfight interview calling his performance sloppy.
The live crowd in Tampa gave a very poor account of themselves, at times booing fighters mercilessly for no apparent reason whatsoever. This was in addition to the usual booing when the fight goes to the ground typical of uneducated MMA fans”they often turned on fighters midbout for no discernable reason. Their behavior reached a nadir in Cain Velasquezs post fight interview, where he was booed mercilessly despite an impressive victory and informing Joe Rogan that he was about to become a father for the first time. It was somewhat surprising, since the Tampa/St. Pete area is home to a flourishing MMA scene.
Brett Favre has been a large component of the Minnesota Vikings undefeated start the NFL regular season, and on Monday night he finally beat his old team, the Green Bay Packers. Favre passed for 271 yards and three touchdowns as the Vikings prevailed by a 30-23 final score. With the victory, Favre has now defeated all 32 NFL teams during his Hall of Fame career. The Vikings improved to 4-0, while the Packers dropped to 2-2.
The Vikings rewarded NFL betting enthusiasts by covering the spread as -4 home favorites. Minnesota is now 3-1 against the number, while the Packers loss evened their ATS record on the season at 2-2.
Afterwards , Favre said that he didnt have any unusual emotions playing against his old team:
“I don’t know how to explain it. I felt right, but I guess I never thought I’d be in that situation.”
He had gone out of his way to downplay the significance of the matchup:
“My statement has been what I’ve done over my career. One game does not define my career good or bad. I know what I’ve done. I’m proud of what I’ve done. I know I can play. I wanted to do what it takes to win.”
Teammate Adrian Peterson said that the team understood the games importance:
“I definitely wanted to get this win for Brett. He downplayed it all week, but I just knew it meant a lot to him. I could see it in his eyes.”
Packers cornerback Charles Woodson gave credit to Favre, but then admitted that his team didnt help themselves with their effort:
“I don’t think there was any question what he could do when he came back. But you know, we didn’t do ourselves any justice.”
Favres replacement under center in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers, had a rough night. He was sacked eight times and threw an interception, though put up decent numbers with 384 yards and two touchdowns but was still critical of his performance:
“Below my expectations, definitely. To have three possessions where you’re in their territory and come away with zero points, two of them are directly related to mistakes by myself, that’s disappointing.”
Vikings coach Brad Childress was impressed with Favres poise in the face of all the media focus on playing his former team:
“You don’t want quarterback crying coming out of the locker room. He was great.”
The Vikings will your head to St. Louis to play one of the NFLs worst teams this weekend, the St. Louis Rams. Minnesota has been installed as a -10 favorite with the total set at 39. Theyll return home to host the Baltimore Ravens the following week before playing the Superbowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers on October 25th. The Packers will take this weekend off before hosting the Detroit Lions on October 18th. Theyll play at Cleveland the following Sunday before a return date with the Vikings at Lambeau Field on November 1st.
In a matchup between two of the worst offenses in the NFL, someone had to win. Despite producing only 9 first downs and 193 yards of total offense, the Cleveland Browns got a late game field goal from Billy Cundiff to defeat the Buffalo Bills 6-3 and win their first game of the season. The Bills had the more productive afternoon statistically, with 13 first downs and 288 yards of offense but were undone by three costly turnovers. Both teams are now 1-4 on the 2009 NFL season. Neither team appears to be headed anywhere but down in the NFL standings.
To successfully bet on the NFL, one needs to find opportunities to play underdogs”this is particularly true in games where neither team is expected to put many points on the board. Such was the case here, as Cleveland easily covered the pointspread as +6 road underdogs. Both teams are now 2-3 against the number on the season. The Browns have now won and covered the last three head to head matchups between the teams. The 9 points scored came nowhere near the total of 41 for an easy UNDER. The Browns have now gone UNDER in 3 of their 5 games this season, while Buffalo has OVER on three of their five posted NFL totals.
It was a game without many highlights. The Browns got on the board first with a 24 yard Cundiff field goal in the second quarter, and took that 3-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Buffalo would tie the score in third on a Rian Lindell 36 yard field goal. That would set the stage for Cundiff to nail the game winner from 18 yards out with: 23 left to play. Despite todays victory, Cleveland is averaging a woeful 11 points per game this season. Buffalo’s PPG numbers are slightly better thanks to decent scoring output in their first two games of the season–theyre averaging just over 15 points per contest. In the Bills last three games, however, theyre averaging a meager 6.6 points per game.
The real loser in Sundays contest may have been Buffalo head coach Dick Jauron. Many were surprised that he was retained after the Bills third straight 7-9 season last year and things have gone from bad to worse so far in the 2009 NFL season. Buffalo has lost to winless teams in back to back weeks, part of a three game losing streak. Overall, the Bills have wound up losers in 12 of their last 15 games. Not that Cleveland has done much better–the win today ended a 10 game losing streak, one short of the all time franchise record. There are at least a few signs of hope in Cleveland, the same can’t be said for Buffalo.
Cleveland will have a tough road assignment next Sunday, heading to Pittsburgh to face the World Champion Steelers. Theyll return home for a game against the Green Bay Packers on October 25th before playing the Chicago Bears in The Windy City the following week. Buffalo will play the next two on the road, heading to the Meadowlands next Sunday for a game against the New York Jets followed by a trip to Charlotte, NC to take on the Carolina Panthers. Theyll return home on November 1st to face the Houston Texans.
