There are a number of wheel chairs available to people these days. This includes both electric and manual types. Your needs and budget will determine which type is best for you.
Much like with cars, you may well be able to get by with one of two wheel chairs but you could have an entire collection of them, designed to serve specific needs.
Even if you can buy more than one wheel chair to take care of all your needs you will still want one for general purposes. This one you can use when you attend a wedding or a funeral. You can also use it while you are at work or at school or university. If you spend time on the street then you are likely to want one that suits movement during lunch hours or for other reasons.
If the disability only involves the legs then go for a manual one if at all possible. The reason is the same as why people are encouraged to bicycle and work out even if they have sit down jobs. The movement is in your best interests. However slight it may be, it is giving you a chance to get a little exercise.
In the case that someone has suffered from a severe onset of muscular dystrophy or some other radically debilitating disorder. For such people, the electric powered wheel chairs with greater neck support may be needed.
However, anyone who is really only limited by injuries or ailments directly related to the lower back or legs should avoid relying on an electric wheel chair during the main part of the day unless they are leading a sedentary lifestyle and also able to buy and to keep sports wheel chairs for other activities. This may well be an economic issue, in whole or in part.
The reality is that even people who have a wheel chair will find that it may have to be transported as is sometimes also the case with bicycles. In the case of a wheel chair, the probability is higher that it will be necessary. Vans are the best type of car for this. Ones where you can open up the back and slide in a folded wheel chair, or even have a ramp coming out of the back which the wheel chair can roll up and down in one piece. In some cases, a person might be able to have a wheel chair lift attached a van that has been gutted so that the person will be able to drive the vehicle once inside and may be able to maneuver the wheel chair without anyone else’s help. While rather tough in its own way, this is a case where someone disabled will be able to maintain an almost perfectly normal level of independence despite the disability.
There are so many types of wheel chairs, that those looking into them for the first time might be surprised to find there are so many. People can get a variety of features built into the wheel chair that suit the needs, whether it is only for use in a shower or rather secure neck and head support. It is comforting to know that such helpful technology is available to people suffering from temporary or permanent disabilities.
But don’t forget about medicare, if you can qualify, you may be able to get your wheel chair at no cost as medicare will pay 80% and your insurance company will pay the remainder.
